Description
Paperback; JESSY is a compelling and heartbreaking story of a young girl, growing up in a time of shifting generational roles and in an America that is self-absorbed and overly indulgent. She is fostered and neglected; forced to negotiate her safety and well-being with abusive and malign adults. JESSY’s upbringing is torn between two awful realities of childhood; surviving with parents who struggled with abuse and addictions combined with a foster house situation where food, shelter and love were provided but safety was compromised and innocence was violated. In JESSY, the challenge to discover inner strength, personal identity and joy is at the heart of Yesenia’s quest, to give meaning to life. As you read, your soul is compelled to live this story and grow with this young girl as she was trying to become who she was destined to be.

I incorporated Jessy by Yesenia Montague as part of an undergraduate Diversity in Criminal Justice (CJ 3500) course I teach. The themes in Jessy – abuse, victimization, life course theory, resilience, healing – fit in well with the subject matter I was covering at that point in the course (crime, victimization, Hispanic culture). The students liked the book very much, probably more than the other course material they had to read. They connected with the book and had a lively discussion when the author, Yesenia, came into the class to do a reading from selected chapters. I would highly recommend assigning Jessy as reading material in relevant Criminal Justice and Sociology courses, at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

A journey of unspeakable frustration and defeat, which led to such admiration for Jessy’s unwavering spirit and resilience. What a testament of strength and courage to share this story.

Jessy is a must read for all women and especially mothers. It takes you through an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows. It is beautifully written. I connected to Jessy in a deep way. For any woman that has suffered you are not alone and like Jessy, you can heal.
